Anumula Revanth Reddy is an Indian politician who has been serving as the second and current Chief Minister of Telangana since 7 December 2023. This shaped his sensibilities toward people-centric political leadership from a young age.

After schooling locally in his village, Reddy graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Andhra Vidyalaya College, the eminent constituent college under Osmania University in Hyderabad. As a first-generation learner, he had to overcome financial hardships to fund his undergraduate studies. During this time, he started demonstrating his debating skills and leadership potential by getting elected as General Secretary of the college’s Student Union body.

The years at Osmania University were pivotal in grooming the undergraduate student activist into a firebrand mass leader through competitive student politics. After graduation, Reddy first ventured into entrepreneurship but soon plunged into full-time public life responding to the difficult agrarian situation and rising unemployment facing rural youth.

Revanth Reddy’s plunge into politics began as a student activist with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in college. He first contested elections in 2006, while still in his thirties, for the local Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) from Midjil Mandal. He won the ZPTC polls as an independent candidate, showcasing his grassroots appeal.

His victory as an independent candidate in the local polls brought Revanth into mainstream political discourse. Subsequently, in 2007, he was elected to the Legislative Council of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh, again as an independent member. By now, Revanth Reddy’s mass connect and fiery oratory skills had impressed Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu, who invited him to join the TDP.

Revanth obliged and joined the TDP, which marked the beginning of his association with a major political party. His stellar rise continued in 2009 when he was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kodangal constituency in Mahbubnagar district, this time on a TDP ticket.

Revanth Reddy’s first electoral win came in 2009 when he was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from Kodangal seat as a TDP candidate. He defeated the veteran 5-time Congress MLA. Over the next decade, Reddy enjoyed consecutive wins – getting re-elected in 2014 to the first Telangana Assembly and serving as TDP’s floor leader.

However, tensions surfaced within the regional TDP leadership in 2017. Unhappy over being sidelined, Reddy quit TDP to join its rival Congress party. He again contested the 2018 polls from Kodangal but suffered his first-ever loss to TRS amidst the regional wave. Though Reddy lost his home seat, Congress recognized his value – appointing him as a Working President of Telangana PCC just months later.

The appointment indicated he remained the party’s prominent face in the state despite the electoral setback. Reddy was now well-poised to play a pivotal role in Congress’ efforts to rebuild itself and take on the mighty TRS juggernaut.

Chief Minister of Telangana

The political wheel turned full circle for Revanth Reddy when the All India Congress Committee (AICC) named him leader of the Congress Legislature Party in December 2023. This came after the newly-elected Congress MLAs in Telangana passed a resolution entrusting the AICC to pick the legislature party leader, clearing the decks for Reddy.

Barely over a year ago in the 2018 state polls, his party had suffered a crushing defeat winning just 19 seats. But Congress managed an astounding turnaround in the recent 2023 elections under Reddy’s stewardship, bagging a majority to oust the TRS government. Riding the pro-incumbency wave, Congress won 87 of 119 seats while TRS was restricted to just 32.

As a reward for the giant-slaying feat, the AICC wasted no time in nominating the 58-year-old Reddy to take over as the second Chief Minister of India’s youngest state. On 7th December, Revanth Reddy was sworn in as CM in a historic moment for Telangana politics and vindication of his 5-decade career as a mass leader.
